HIRO : The Versatile Robot

Healthcare Assistive Robot for Frontline Infection Control) is co-developed by Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of Health Sciences (HS), School of Engineering (SOE) and School of Life Sciences and Technology (LSCT) and SingHealth Polyclinics. HIRO is designed to improve the infection control of a healthcare setting such as polyclinics via ultraviolet light to reduce the spread of germs. In addition it assists to remind the visitors and patients of proper face mask attire and screen them for their body temperature. HIRO is equipped with technology to allow its safe navigation through the passageways and can serve as an usher to direct them to the various services points in the precinct.

Bio-aerosol Containment Unit

In collaboration with the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), Robotics Research & Innovation Centre (RRIC) developed a bio-aerosol containment unit (BCU) which functions as a portable negative pressure isolation chamber to protect healthcare workers from infectious droplets during attempts to resuscitate COVID-19 patients.

It is an isolation chamber that mounts to hospital bed as a substitute for airborne infectious isolation room. It can be deployed to Emergency department, temporary Intensive care unit and general wards. It provides effective protection to the healthcare workers during aerosol generating procedure, such as nebuliser, intubation and during high flow nasal cannula.

The design of BCU is to mimic the standard airborne isolation room, negative pressure within BCU is generated by connecting to wall vacuum suction. The material used is transparent acrylic. Both side of the box has two openings, it is fitted with specially designed silicone cover allow healthcare worker to carry out medical procedures and provide care to the patient.

Teaching Assistant Robot

RRIC in collaboration with a local primary school, has developed a teaching assistant robot to enhance the active classroom learning experience for students when they learn mathematics and science.

The robot can supplement and enrich the teacher’s lesson delivery by playing relevant video clips on the screen mounted on its body. Designed for interactivity, the robot generates questions for students to attempt, allowing them to learn in an engaging way. Teachers are also able to obtain feedback on the students' learning to help them in their lesson design.

In socially distanced classrooms during the Covid-19 pandemic, the teaching assistant robot minimizes close contact between teacher and pupils without compromising the learning experience. The robot can also act as a campus hygiene ambassador to remind students to uphold their personal hygiene and maintain social distancing in a fun way.

Smart Vending System for Hotel Industry

With contactless transactions on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic, RRIC and the School of InfoComm Technology (ICT) jointly developed the Smart Vending System for local budget hotel operator, Cover Projects Pte Ltd.

Designed to serve guests when they arrive at the hotel, the automated Smart Vending System automates the check-in and check-out process, monitors the temperature and dispenses card keys to the guests upon check-in. In addition, the system also minimizes the need for guests to interact with hotel staff or other guests by providing cafeteria services. Guests can order their meals through the hotel portal and use their card key to collect their food from the built-in lockers in the system.

Fish-ball forming and You Tiao processing system

Commissioned by Thong Siek Food Industry, the RRIC provided a proof of concept solution to develop a Fish-ball forming device and You Tiao processing system. The spirals of the forming device is fabricated out of food-safe filaments used in 3D printing technology.

The You Tiao processing system is a close collaboration with Thong Siek Food Industry which started off as a Final Year Project. This project was an eye-opener for the students in getting insights to the automation of food processing. Thong Siek Food Industry and RRIC forged forward in further development and improvement of the process.

Besides customizing robotics solutions that make use of existing infrastructure for cost effectiveness, the RRIC’s solutions help companies to meet requirements to reduce the number of staff on-site during the Covid-19 pandemic.
